Our 2022 Volvo XC40 Review

Looking Into Leasing a Volvo XC40?

Glancing at the unusual look of the Volvo XC40, you start to question if the German big brands are doing something incorrectly. Their "Russian doll" designs result in a high degree of model similarity, which frequently makes it difficult to distinguish one from another. Volvo's inventiveness is at the very least incredibly energising.

However, the XC40 does still feature some recognisable Volvo design elements. For example, it mimics the company's other models with its Thor's Hammer headlight design and equally eye-catching LED rear lights, maintaining the bloodline's distinctiveness. To find out more about the Volvo XC40 keep reading!

Volvo XC40 Drive

The plug-in hybrid (PHEV) Recharge T4 petrol, which combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine and an electric motor to produce 211 horsepower, is our favourite pick for the Volvo XC40. The responsive standard automatic gearbox should satisfy the needs of the majority of purchasers, and the quick 0-62 mph time of 8.5 seconds.

Recharge's T5 PHEV, which has higher power, accelerates from 0 to 62 mph in 7.3 seconds. Both plug-in hybrid vehicles can travel 21 miles on electricity alone, but the less expensive Ford Kuga PHEV was able to continue for 31 miles on the same day. The plug-in Recharge versions are significantly less nimble when powered just by electricity, but they nevertheless move steadily up to motorway speeds.

The 2.0-litre petrol B3 (161 bhp) and B4 (194 bhp) incorporate mild hybrid technology to improve performance and efficiency. The front-wheel-drive B3 provides just that if you're seeking a little bit more thrust than the 127 horsepower base T2 gives, with a wide range of shoves accessible from around 2000 rpm.

Volvo XC40 Interior

The Volvo XC40 has some of the greatest front seats you'll find in a family SUV. On all variants, there are multiple adjustment options, including tilt, height, and four-way electric lumbar adjustment. A completely motorised driver's seat is included in the Plus trim. When driving the XC40, you sit higher in the driving position than you do in many competitors, especially the BMW X1. As a result, the XC40 feels more like a true SUV than just a jacked-up family hatchback.

The XC40's dashboard is dominated by a 9.0-inch tablet-style touchscreen that functions very similarly to an iPad. Although the concept of a screen that allows you to swipe, pinch, and scroll seems appealing in principle, in practice you have to divert your attention from the road for a longer period than is desirable merely to perform basic chores, like switching the radio station, for example.

The XC40 is no exception to Volvo's current position among the industry leaders in terms of interior quality. Everything you touch in the XC40 feels both opulent and durable enough to withstand daily family use and the test of time.

Volvo XC40 Space

Even if you choose the optional panoramic glass roof, which somewhat lowers the height, there is plenty of room in front for your head and legs to spread out. The inside is spacious by class standards, so you won't be bumping elbows with your front passenger either. Taller adults may sit comfortably in the back of the XC40 without their heads grazing the ceiling or their knees slamming into the seat in front. It lacks a little legroom compared to the BMW X1, but only a carload of enormous people will find this to be a problem.

The official boot capacity of the XC40 is 452 litres, which is significantly less than what you get in X1 models without plug-in hybrid technology. To make up for any limitations above deck, the load bay's commendable square proportions make loading quite simple, and if you decide against getting a spare wheel, you get a large underfloor storage compartment.
