SUVs A Brief Guide

SUV – What’s all the fuss about?

SUV – or in other words: Sport Utility Vehicle. They are dominating the family car market, but why? Well, firstly, they are spacious and quite often can seat seven people; they also have a high driving position offering a reassuring and commanding view of the road ahead. And finally, they deliver a much better, safer performance in icy, inclement driving conditions. As a consequence, they are rapidly becoming the first choice for people with families, friends and lots of luggage to move around and are gradually replacing the less impressive MPV. If we were looking for reasons not to buy one there aren’t many. We could say that they are generally less fuel efficient or bulky to manoeuvre and at the top end price-wise, but these unconvincing negatives are not putting British car buyers off who are primarily looking for safety, comfort and practicality.

Let’s take a look at some of the popular models. The examples we are including fall into either the ‘Standard’ SUV range or the ‘Luxury’ SUV range. All of them are vehicles that we sell a lot of here at MWVC and with some, you may find we have some great offers if you look now - so please click on the links to view the relevant pages of our website.

Nissan Qashqai:

A favourite since the emergence of mainstream family SUV’s. The Qashqai has stylish looks and had an appeal that other manufacturers wanted to copy. It was first introduced in 2007, and its elevated driving position was received well. It is a lovely car, and perfect for families.

Renault Kadjar:

This French car uses the same underpinnings and engines as the aforementioned Nissan Qashqai. It undercuts some of its rivals on costs and CO2 emissions and is a popular, spacious family SUV.

Volkswagen Tiguan:

A mid-sized SUV and all-round family car. It offers space, comfort and practicality and 4Motion four-wheel drive. A classy car and a solid choice.

Peugeot 3008:

A French car with a striking appearance and swish interior. It handles well, has a good-sized boot and is one of the best family SUV’s you can buy. There is no four wheel drive option but the 3008 has all-weather tyres and traction control which provide adequate grip in icy conditions.

Audi Q5:

This is a classy all-rounder and one of the best Luxury SUV’s. It will appeal to discerning buyers looking for quality. It is well made and has one of the best interiors in its class. There is a wide choice of engines and all models feature Audi’s excellent Quattro four-wheel drive system.

BMW X3:

This is a decent mid-range SUV that handles well. The X3’s engines have top-drawer driver appeal and its on-road manners are hard to fault. Although you could - may be - criticise its provision of standard equipment, its perceived quality ranks high above most of its competitors.

Jaguar F-Pace:

Jaguarsfirst SUV handles remarkably well and has quickly elevated itself to the position of Jaguar’s best-selling model. Its driving experience is closer to a sports car than a traditional off-roader and it boasts loads of space and a huge boot ‘to boot’!! If you consider this alongside its huge depth of ability and stylish looks, you’ll agree that it justifies its positive price tag; far north of £40,000.

Land Rover Discovery:

Our final featured SUV; the Discovery is one of the most talented cars of its kind on sale today. With space, practicality and luxury as a given it demonstrates true off-road functionality as well. At just the turn of a dial you can switch it to deal with dirt, sand or snowy conditions. Even if you never need this the Discovery delivers comfort, space and is good to drive even around town. It ticks all the boxes and deserves its status as one of the best SUV’s on the market.
