A brief guide to guide to van sizes.

Small Vans

Generally a similar size to an average estate car but with a bigger load area and added practicality, a small van could be everything you need for an everyday, general use commercial vehicle. Load lengths tend to be around 1.5 meters with a payload of around 700kg. Small vans are not challenging or daunting to drive and behave very similar to a car. So as long as your stuff isn't too long or too heavy a small van might be everything you need.

Top Tip: Some small vans will allow you to move or fold the front passenger seat giving you a boost in load length. Good for the odd journey but you may want to consider a larger van if this is a regular requirement.

Popular choices: Ford Transit Connect, Citroen Berlingo, Peugeot Partner. Mercedes Citan.

Medium Vans

The “do it all” van suitable for the majority of people, a medium size van gives you the best of all worlds. Easy to manage from a diving point of view, while giving a load length and payload suitable for the majority of applications. Medium size vans come in a staggering number of variations and loads length, load height and payloads can vary hugely. But if you work on an average load length of around 2.4 meters and payloads of 800kg to 1400kg you won't be far off.

Top Tip: If you don't want to go to a large van but need a bit extra room speak to one of our account managers about having a high roof or long wheelbase version of your van of choice. This might give you that bit extra you need.

Popular choices: Ford Transit Custom. Citroen Dispatch, Peugeot Expert, Vauxhall Vivaro

Large Vans

Going with a large van often means not only do you get more load length but also more height too. Due to their size, large vans are not always the easiest to drive and park therefore they are only really popular with those people who really need the space and anything smaller just won't cut it. Load lengths are generally around 4 meters or more meaning that things such as carpets and kitchen countertops can fit in without any issues. But be careful on payload, see our top tip below.

Top Tip; Be aware that the bigger the van doesn't always mean the higher the payload. In fact it often means the opposite as the vehicle itself has a higher weight the amount it can safely and legally carry is reduced. Be sure to check before committing. Speak to one of our experts if you're unsure of anything.

Popular Choices: Ford Transit, Mercedes Sprinter. Citroen relay, Peugeot Boxer
